The RECREATE project – REConstructing papyrus scrolls and REcovering Ancient Texts with the aid of a new digital tool, funded by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, aims to develop and improve Maque-IT, the first software tool specifically conceived for the virtual reconstruction of papyrus scrolls, with particular focus on the carbonized Herculaneum scrolls with complex stratigraphy.
The software was conceived by Federica Nicolardi and Marzia D’Angelo; a prototype was created by Florent Noël (Curious Company) and funded by the Centro Internazionale per lo Studio dei Papiri Ercolanesi ‘Marcello Gigante’.
RECREATE has the purpose of implementing and making Maque-IT accessible as an innovative tool for the digital reconstruction of Herculaneum and Graeco-Egypt papyrus scrolls, with the aim of supporting the work of papyrology researchers and promoting the use of digital technologies in the research and study of cultural heritage.
