Federica Nicolardi and Marzia D'Angelo, focusing on the study of carbonized Herculaneum scrolls with complex stratigraphy, come up with the idea of a software for virtual reconstruction of papyrus scrolls
Collaboration is arranged with Florent Noël, Thierry Dassonville, and Jeremy Vagnet (Curious Company) to develop a prototype of the software
At the XXX International Congress of Papyrology (Paris, July 25-30, 2022), Federica Nicolardi and Marzia D'Angelo present the software prototype, funded by the Centro Internazionale per lo Studio dei Papiri Ercolanesi 'Marcello Gigante' and the American Friends of Herculaneum
The project RECREATE - REConstructing papyrus scrolls and REcovering Ancient TExts with the aid of a new digital tool, funded by the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung Foundation, begins. Starting with the prototype designed for the Herculaneum scrolls, the project aims to refine the Maque-IT prototype to achieve an advanced and applicable software for virtual reconstruction of all papyrus scrolls
In June 11-14, 2024 at the University of Naples Federico II and in collaboration with the Centro Internazionale per lo Studio dei Papiri Ercolanesi 'Marcello Gigante' the first Hands on Reconstruction training workshop will be held, carried out as part of the RECREATE project, with the aim of providing participants with the main theoretical and practical skills in the field of papyrus scroll reconstruction and illustrating and testing the Maque-IT prototype
From May 28-30, 2025, the second Heads & Hands on Reconstruction workshop will be held at the University of Naples Federico II, with the aim of reflecting on case studies and applying methodologies for digital reconstruction of papyrus scrolls using the updated version of the Maque-IT software
